first edition with this imprint, later issue with title and half-title reset removing Byron's name, "almost'" mispelled in last line of page 36, with the preface "Extract of a Letter from Geneva'" and "Extract of a Letter . . ." at the end. The Vampyre was written by John William Polidori, M.D., a physician who became secretary to Lord Byron in 1816. The first issue had Byron's name on the title page but the poet, furious, had it removed from later issues. Polidori died shortly afterwards. Wolff 5577; Wise page 96.
